Cedar Point Yacht Club Laser Racing Series
The Laser is one of the largest one design classes in the world, with over 200,000 boats built to date, and active fleets in over 80 countries. An Olympic class since 1996, the Laser is, for many people, the perfect single-handed one design, combining affordability, ease of rigging, speed, close competition, and class camaraderie among sailors of all ages and skill levels. And while the Laser can be a physically demanding boat to sail, many people continue to race them competitively well into their 60’s and 70’s. These are just some of the reasons why sailors who own and race other boats still can't wait to get back in their Laser.
For more than 30 years, Cedar Point Yacht Club has been a hot bed of competitive Laser racing in New England, featuring top national, regional and local talent, from juniors to grand masters. Many CPYC fleet members regularly compete at major regional, national and international regattas, while others are actively involved in coaching local junior and high school sailing programs. But one thing they all share is love of the Laser class and a desire to help others discover the pleasure and excitement of racing these exciting boats.
The CPYC Laser Series takes place in the Fall and Spring, with additional racing and training events held during the Summer months. Series racing regularly features 25-40 boats on the line - Standards and Radials - on any given race day, with larger attendance at the several major regattas during the year. All sailors, not just CPYC members, are welcome to participate, and many people find that participation in the Laser series invariably leads to CPYC membership, enabling them to enjoy the many other benefits of the Club and its outstanding facilities. Daily prizes are awarded for the top finishers in Standards and Radials, with overall prizes awarded at the conclusion of each series. De-briefs are also held at the conclusion of the day's racing, with top performers disclosing their race-winning secrets free of charge.
For those who don’t own a Laser but are interested in learning if it might be the boat for them, CPYC has club boats available for charter on race days. The Boat Locker, a local Laser dealer, also offers Laser charters on a longer-term basis, while new boats can be found at several local Connecticut Laser dealers.
So grab your hiking pants and a PFD and come out and sail with the CPYC Laser fleet this Fall.
