St Pete NOOD Regatta Report on a CPYC J70

It was 0 to 10 degrees in Westport so what do sailors do? Go to Florida!
Allan Stern, Charlie Krawiec, Paul Abdullah and Bill Walker did just that and sailed Josh Goldman’s J70 in fabulous conditions while it was bitter cold to the north. Kerry Klingler and team were sailing “Menace”. This is our story-

Thursday, Charlie Krawiec, a Jr Sailor from CPYC and myself drove over to Davis Island YC where Josh Goldman had been sailing to retrieve his J70 and left for what we thought would be a glorious sail to St Petersburg YC 3 hrs later. Shortly after leaving, with our kite up and sailing past pods of dolphin finning, it began to look like LIS as the wind died and motor came out. Thank god J70’s carry outboards! 4 hrs later we arrived at St Pete to Allan Stern and Paul Abdullah waiting to practice. After a brief stop we went out sailing in 12-15 knots and buzzed around the bay getting used to the boat and tuning up.

Friday began light with winds 4-6 and an AP, but shortly we were racing three races and our practice paid off the day prior as we had a 6, 2 & 8 out of 22 boats and were in 5’th place! The breeze had picked up to 6-10 for a perfect day of racing on the bay, plus we were sailing in shorts, how good does it get! Back in, tied up and showered we hit the town for a nice dinner and relaxing. St Pete is a fun happening town with lots of night life and tons of great restaurants.

Saturday was perfect with a front having gone thru during the night and we were ready after a good nights sleep to go challenge the pros at the top. With winds around 8-12 it was perfect sailing conditions and we managed a 2,3,14 & 9 as the wheels fell off with shifty winds on the third race and we got caught out on the wrong side. Still, sailing in Florida and snowing in CT, just a great day! Back in we were treated to a great BBQ night at St Pete YC with drinks on the deck overlooking the harbor.

Sunday the breeze was on with winds in the high teens, perfect for J70’s. Unfortunately we were not in the groove for the first race and we had a 9 which made us go into defense for the last race of the series to cover our spot with Team Africa. We sailed hard and smart for a fourth to finish out the series and end in 6’th place, 6 points behind our other CPYC compatriot Kerry Klingler on Menace in fifth. We were extremely happy with our result not having sailed here before and had lots of great sailing combined with the wonderful hospitality of ST Pete YC. Happy sailing! Bill Walker – Team VICTURA
