Thistle Class Long Island Sound Districts

Five Cedar Point boats traveled June 11-12, 2016, to Ocean Gate, NJ, to compete in the Long Island Sound District Championship.

Ocean Gate Yacht Club put on a terrific event with great meals and wonderful hospitality.  Club members hosted many of the competitors in their homes, making it a very welcoming experience.

The weather was warm, windy and building.  One race was held Saturday in breeze that started around 15kts with gusts to 20 and then started to build.  A significant percentage of the fleet capsized, and at least half the boats opted not to fly spinnakers downwind.  After one race, the Race Committee decided the building breeze was too much and cancelled for the day. On shore, the hoist broke and half the fleet was carried out of the water at the beach. A tired fleet appreciated the club’s home cooked meal and cold beer even more the additional exercise.

On Sunday winds built further as a front arrived from the northwest.  By mid-morning the lulls were in the range of 20 knots and the puffs recorded at the nearby weather station were well over 30 knots.  Racing was done for the day.

Lloyd Kitchin from Hopatcong, NJ, was the overall regatta winner.  Congratulations to Steve Gruver, Jay Lurie, and Kristen Barnard for finishing first in the district and second place overall.
