Junior Sailing Program - General Information 

Morning Classes – Mon-Fri

1. BASIN BANDITS / INTRO TO SAILING: 9:00 am – 11:30 am – 1 Week Sessions, Ages 6 to 8. Limited to six sailors, this program is designed specifically for younger children interested in exploring the water through sailing and other water sports. Familiarizes young sailors to the basics of sailing including wind direction, tides, sail trim, steering with a tiller, knot tying, and the parts of a boat. By the end of the program the sailors will be able to confidently sail an Optimist with a partner.

2 .OPTIMIST BEGINNER / INTERMEDIATE: 8:30 am – 12:00 noon – 4 and 8 Week Sessions, Ages 8 to 14. Grouped by age and experience level. Each child sails his or her own 8 ft, single sail, Optimist dinghy. CPYC has three Optis available for charter and can put you in touch with other charters. Many families purchase their own boats.

3. PIXEL. 8:30 am – 12:00 noon – 4 and 8 Week Sessions, Ages 11 to 18. For sailors who want to learn how to sail a 2-3 person boat with a main sail, jib and spinnaker. The pixel is a 14 ft. boat with no trapeze. Boat handling and racing skills will be taught. Sailors may participate in JSA regattas or may opt out. CPYC has 2 club Pixels for charter and can put you in touch with other charters. Families may also purchase their own boats. Participants should register with a sailing partner (or two partners if boat will be sailed with three sailors).

Afternoon Classes - All Classes 12:30 PM - 5:00 PM, Mon-Fri (rigged and on water by 1:00 pm)

1. ADVANCED OPTIMIST: 4 and 8 Week Sessions , Ages 10 to 14. For experienced Opti sailors who are ready to focus on advanced racing, have a minimum of 3 yrs of Opti sailing experience and approval by the Head Instructor.

2. PIXEL. 4 and 8 Week Sessions, Ages 11 to 18. For sailors who want to learn how to sail a 2-3 person boat with a main sail, jib and spinnaker. The pixel is a 14 ft. boat with no trapeze. Boat handling and racing skills will be taught. Sailors may participate in JSA regattas or may opt out. CPYC has 2 club Pixels for charter and can put you in touch with other charters. Families may also purchase their own boats. Participants should register with a sailing partner (or two partners if boat will be sailed with three sailors).

3. CLUB 420: 4 and 8 Week Session, Ages 14 to 18. For sailors with prior experience in Opti, Pixel, Laser or similar boat and who meet JSA age/weight requirements. This is a two to three person, 14 ft boat with main sail, jib, spinnaker and trapeze. CPYC has six Club 420s available for charter and can put you in touch with other charters. Families may also purchase their own boats. Participants must register with a sailing partner.

5. LASER STANDARD / RADIAL: 4 and 8 Week Sessions, Ages 14 to 18. For sailors with prior experience in Opti, Pixel, Laser or similar boat and who meet JSA age/weight requirements. One person,14 ft boat. Laser Standards/Radials are taught together. Choice depends on sailor’s size and experience--Radial has smaller sail area and is more appropriate for juniors in 100- 150 lb weight range. Standard is for larger, more experienced sailors.
