Wonderful ODR Rendezvous at Port Jefferson
The forecast was ominous with three days of rain, thunderstorms, and temperatures dropping into the 50’s. Great let’s go cruising. That’s what five hardy crews did. Tom Graves and friend Cherie Jafar aboard Bad Dog, Larry and Joan Romano aboard Covenant, Michael and Jennifer Bayuk on Lifeline, Rob and Nancy Doctors on Lyreal and Fred and Kathy Fassman on Sorcerer.
Starting out on Friday the seas were calm and the wind a light easterly as we sailed across the 13 miles to Port Jefferson and the waiting moorings at Port Jefferson Yacht Club. We kept a weather eye out for the coming rain and storms but found only a pleasant 60-degree reach. Maybe Saturday will bring the dreaded remnants of Alberto, the first tropical storm of the season. The PJYC was very hospitable and their friendly launch service made visiting town and other boats easy.
Saturday we woke to sunny skies and warm temperatures. A great day to walk around the town, have lunch ashore and appreciate how the town has been revived from the down trodden place of 30 years ago. Kathy and I have been sailing to PJ since 1971 and remember when the only place one could eat was at the Elks Club in their meeting /dining room on the second floor of a big red stone building. The building is still there but it now houses a boutique clothing store. A fun brewery, upscale shops and restaurants along with glimpses of PJ’s shipbuilding history and a boat building workshop kept us all entertained.
Cocktails aboard Sorcerer kicked off the evening fun with good wines, tasty hors d'oeuvres and lots of conversation. Dinner at the Fifth Season restaurant Saturday night topped off a fine day with fine dining.

The result through Saturday was a perfect cruise but the Sunday forecast was once again ominous. Really? What is wrong with a broad reach with 15-18 knots out of the East-SE? We sailed back to Cedar Point YC having foiled the weather gods, supported the ODR, and with our fellow CPYC members had a most enjoyable cruise.
