Gay V. Land: 1925 - 2019
Former Commodore and long-time Treasurer, Gay Land, passed away on 1/21; he was 94.
Liz and Gay, CPYC Honorary Life members and holders of seniority #1 had moved to a lovely retirement community in Atlanta, near their daughter Cindy in September. Leaving Fairfield Co. after a busy lifetime was a leap!
Gay was CPYC Treasurer from 1961 until 1978 except for 1965 and 1966, when as Commodore he led an able board who built the new club at Bluff Point. They bought the property, sold (still under water) building lots to pay the dredgers and builders, dealt with town and state agencies, etc…a busy, but exciting time! Membership built up and here we are!
The Lands built their beautiful house next to the club where they continued to raise their 4 children. They began sailing Lightnings at Cedar Point and moved on to big boats for racing and cruising.
Most club members don’t know this, but Gay, along with Jo Fox, Editor of the Fairpress newspaper, led a town-wide campaign to “discourage” the United Illuminating Co. from building a nuclear power plant on Cockenoe Island!! Picture that!!

It is so sad to lose longtime friends and our sympathies go out to Liz, David, Ellie, Cindy, Steven, and the rest of the family.
There will be a memorial service on February 9 (2 pm) at “their” United Methodist Church of Westport, 49 Weston Rd. There will also be a notice in the Westport News.
