Customer Appreciation Night – 15% Discount

That’s what the sign said at “Jasmine”, and for 15 V15’s, last night was very much appreciated.  Yes it was a little cold (ok, a lot cold) and a little lumpy (more like square moguls), but the competition was hot and friendly (like, well, never mind).  The fleet was revved up and very competitive, more like a mid-Summer night than early June.  With some of our better younger sailors (Harry, Phillip) and some of our better, how should I put it, seasoned sailors (Cleody, Ched) yet to make it out, it looks like a very good season is on tap.  A strong current, a clocking breeze and tight lines made everybody work hard to stay in the front row.   In the end three different teams won races and there were a few new faces in the top five.  5th went to Charles Stanley who sailed w/ his oldest daughter Venetra by virtue of a tie break over Frank Pizzo.  Charles/Venetra won the 3rd race and it is good to see him transition successfully into the V15 which he has not sailed previously.  Chris/Dona were 4th and Marc Jacobi sailing w/ Betty Montgomery sailed the purple Club boat into a solid 3rd place.  Craig Beardsley, paired with CPYC Challenge Cup crew Robin Schulz, sailed hull #15 (see above pattern of recurring 15’s) into 2nd and Beth and I continued our hot streak to win the night despite one or two shaky (ok, really poor) starts.  Keeping the boat moving upwind in the steep chop was challenging.  We tried to: not pinch, keep the weight forward, tack away if someone was on our lee bow - it’s important to be able to put the bow down occasionally to build speed, and sail the boat fat and flat, except for big lulls which required some heel.  We also made sure the rig wasn’t too tight, a little headstay sag goes a long way towards powering up the jib.

Afterwards about 15 of us (see recurring theme on fifteen) made it to Jasmine where the discount was appreciated but none of us would’ve minded paying full price for a night like this.

Attention Numerologists:  Check out Toby’s scores: 11,11,11,11 and 1 ooooooh…. And his sail number is 981 and 9 – 8 = 1 oooooh…..
