We’re excited to host the Thistle Nationals, July 28 - August 3 (Women's and Junior's will be July 28).  It’s going to be a blast!!  See below for more info.

We’ll have a limited supply of long-sleeve wikis for sale at registration, but if you want short-sleeve or want to ensure we have your size, please pre-order and we’ll have them for you at registration.

On the Water

Our PRO will be Dick Thackaberry, who ran Nationals for us in 2009. Dick and his team have run a boatload of big events including multiple Thistle ACs, Lightning North Americans, Flying Scot North Americans, Cedar Point’s annual OneDesign Regatta, among many others. Dick is a long time dinghy sailor and runs great races.

Chief Judge
Our Chief Judge will be Bruce Cook. Bruce is an ISAF International Umpire and Judge, as well as a US Sailing Umpire, Umpire Assessor and National Judge. He hails from Bayville, NY, where he works with Oakcliff Sailing Center and their fleet of match racers. He has served as judge or umpire at numerous Olympic Trials, World Championships and Tour Match Racing events. 

US Sailing has granted “no appeal” status for the Nationals Qualifying Series
Our Jury will be one of the most senior we’ve ever seen at a Nationals. We needed such a group to be granted “no appeal” status for the Qualification Series by US Sailing. Given that the Championship series starts right after the Qualifying series is completed, there’s no time for appeal. To qualify for “no appeal” status, we needed at least two National Judges. With the addition of Timmy Larr, Dave Perry and Patty O’Donnell to the jury, we now have four National Judges, of which two are International Judges.

Sailing Area

Unlike in 2009, we will be sailing in the regular CPYC sailing area closer to shore. This is the area we have always used for ACs and Districts. Dick will keep us far enough out to avoid geographic effects, and few will miss the extra distance to the course or the faster current in the middle of the Sound.

CPYC and the New Pavilion

Cedar Point was built for regattas like Nationals. The Clubhouse has a large main room upstairs with porches all around so you can always choose to sit on the windward or leeward side. Last year, under the leadership of then Commodore Brian Joyce and current Vice Commodore Charlie Kreitler, CPYC completed construction of a new covered Pavilion. The Pavilion has a large roof with rain curtains and cement floor and is surrounded by outdoor seating areas with couches, chairs, and umbrellas. It’s across the lawn from the Clubhouse on the point and is plenty big enough to seat the fleet. It’s a great addition to the CPYC facilities and we plan to use it for dinners and other gatherings. CPYC also has a couple of beaches for swimming or sunning, a snack bar, lawn games and ping pong. We’ll arrange a cornhole tournament during the week – start practicing!

CPYC Pavilion

CPYC has a large paved drystall area immediately adjacent to two high-speed hoists within a protected basin. The rigging dock can hold about thirty Thistles and there are many places around the basin to tie up. Launching and retrieval are about as fast as it gets.

North Sails Coaching and Morning Briefings
North will be offering on-the-water coaching on Friday before Nationals and Morning Briefings each morning during the week.  Thank you North, Paul Abdullah and Ched Proctor for providing these awesome events and supporting the Class.


“Mafia at the Beach” blender party on Thursday
Hawaiian shirts, black socks, fedoras…you get the gist. Slick back that hair because it’s going to be fun. The blenders will be spinning out the frozen concoctions, the appetizers will be warm, grab a taco at the food truck and dig the reggae beat of the steel drum band.

Dorm Rooms at Fairfield University

Check-In:  When you arrive to campus (1073 North Benson Road, 06824) navigate to Barone Campus center to pick up your keys. You will need to call the Conference Assistant on call @ 203-395-3417 or 203-692-5134. If you are having issues getting ahold of someone please try the other number.

Update May 10:  Fairfield University has made more townhouses available.  So far, Fairfield U has been able to get everyone a townhouse who has requested one. 

Update February 9:
  Good news.  We will be housed in Kostka Hall which has pairs of double bedrooms joined by a shared bathroom.  So, four people will share a bath.  "Team Name" on the registration form will be used to pair up bedrooms so you can share a bath with your teammates.  For more information, go to https://www.fairfield.edu/undergraduate/student-life-and-services/student-services/housing/residence-life/housing-options/suite-style-residence-halls/kostka-hall/.

Do you long to re-live your college days? Fairfield University has agreed to let us rent dorm rooms on their campus for Nationals. Our rate is $350/week for a double room and $294/week for a single room. Rooms will be available Saturday, July 28, with departures on Saturday, August 4 (no partial weeks). Everyone will be housed in one residence hall. 

Fairfield U is ten miles from Cedar Point and has a beautiful campus near downtown Fairfield with its bars, restaurants, shops, delis and amenities. Lodgers will be able to use Fairfield U’s brand new Recreation Complex with excellent workout facilities, pool (limited hours), sports fields, courts and the dorm’s laundry room. Fairfield University Recreation Complex

Free WiFi will be available and each room has an internet jack and cable outlet with 300 channels, but bring your own tablet, laptop, or TV (and coaxial cable) for your viewing pleasure. Also bring your own pillow and linens, or Fairfield U can provide them for $25/person. 

We’re not sure which dorm we’ll be assigned yet. One possibility has separate men’s and women’s bathrooms on each hall, the other has a shared bathroom between two rooms.

Fairfield U will also have a few townhouses available with two double bedrooms, common room, kitchenette and bath for $580/week. The townhouses are the better deal for a group, but there will only be about 6-8 available (first come, first served). 

Go to this link to sign up with Fairfield U:  https://tinyurl.com/ycyb8lyh.  There will be an option on the page to request a townhouse, if available, but reservations will revert to dorm rooms if no townhouse is available (we won’t know for a while how many will be available). The page will ask for your roommate’s name if requesting a double. 

Doubletree Hotel deal

We’ve worked out a great hotel deal. The Doubletree by Hilton in Norwalk is offering a $109/night group rate for Nationals. It’s a full-service hotel with restaurant, bar and pool, but no free breakfast. It is nine miles from the Club.

We have fifteen rooms blocked for Nationals.  After those are booked, the group rate may not be available if the hotel is full, so reserve your rooms early.  No reservations at the group rate will be available after July 20. 

To make your reservation, call (800) 492-7148, and request the “Thistle Nationals - Cedar Point Regatta” group rate.  You can also book online by going to www.norwalk.doubletree.com and selecting the “Add Special Rates Code” option and entering “CPR” in the “Group Code” box.

If you seek luxury, we suggest the Inn at Longshore across the inlet from the Club, or the Delamar in Southport.  Other mid-priced options include the Westport Inn, Hilton Garden Inn Norwalk, and Marriott Courtyard Norwalk.

Camping on the Norwalk Islands

For the intrepid sailor/camper, the Norwalk Islands are just offshore from Cedar Point and have public campsites. They are beautiful little islands of sand, trees and rock with protected beach landing areas, but they are islands and the Club can’t provide ferry service. Other than these islands, there are no campsites nearby.

Cockenoe Island

The nearest island to CPYC is Cockenoe, which is about a mile by water; reasonable kayak distance for those so inclined.  Cockenoe has four campsites managed by the town of Westport. Of note is that you can beach launch Thistles here and it’s adjacent to the sailing area, but there are no bathrooms or other amenities on the island. A permit application can be found at www.westportct.gov/modules/showdocument.aspx?documentid=249.

The town of Norwalk manages sixteen campsites on Grassy and Shea islands. These are farther away, about 2-3 miles by water from CPYC and have bathrooms/outhouses. More information can be found at www.norwalkct.org/581/Fees-Permits.

To make these work, campers would need to bring a boat or boats that can land on a beach and figure out the logistics. We know it’s not ideal and would take some planning, but you couldn’t ask for better scenery.
