We are saddened to learn of the passing of Honorary Life member and member #2, Margaret Yingling on March 21, at the age of 95, in Washington DC where she had gone to live near her daughter Mimi Morse. Margaret was our club secretary from 1980 to 1983, Remlin Award recipient in 1987, club centennial committee member in 1987, and was a long time race committee member on Wednesday nights.
Margaret was born in Santiago, Chile in 1923, (her father’s business had taken her parents there) and she lived a long and adventuresome life with dear husband Orvis and their three children. They lived in Germany right after the war. Orvis was with the U.S. State Dept. and their 2 girls were born there. Their third child, John, was born in Niagara Falls. After a new job, they moved to Westport!
Orvis was interested in horses and Margaret, in boats. They day-sailed their new Blue Jay with 5 Yinglings and their dog aboard. Needing a “bigger” boat, they bought a Thistle in 1963 and raced out of the Compo Basin where the club was at the time. They were very active racers for years.
Margaret was also very involved with the Westport Garden Club and the Saugatuck Congregational Church. Her ashes will be interred at the church’s Evergreen Cemetery later this spring. Our thoughts and prayers go out to her children, Martine, Mimi, John and their families.
