Program Overview

Our Mission: Help junior sailors experience the joy of sailing and sailboat racing. To promote ethical behavior and the teaching of life-long lessons, which seek to build character, foster teamwork and strengthen respect for self and others.

Programs for all ages, skill levels and racing/recreational interests:

Youngsters Introduction to Sailing (6-7 year old)
  • 1 week sessions (max. 2 weeks per child per summer)
  • Puddle Ducks (6 yo) – explore sailing with instructor on board
  • Basin Bandits (7 yo) – explore sailing with instructor near by
  • Boat: Optimist (one person boat), included in the program fee

Optimist (8-14 year old)
  • 4 or 8 week sessions
  • Recreational (with intro to racing): Beginner to Advanced (AM)
  • Racing: Intermediate (AM), Advanced (PM)
  • Boat: Optimist (one person single sail boat designed to teach sailing and feel safe for young sailors, raced from club levels to international competition); 
    Own or charter/rent a boat

RS Feva (12-16 year old)
  • 4 or 8 week sessions
  • Recreational (with intro to racing): Beginner to Advanced (all PM)
  • Racing Focus (PM session)
  • Boat: RS Feva (modern two person boat for teens with two sails plus asymmetric spinnaker, raced from club levels to international competition); 
    Own or charter/rent a boat
Laser (14-18 year old)
  • 4 or 8 week sessions
  • Racing Focus (PM session)
  • Own boat needed (no club boats available for charter/rent)
  • Boat: Laser (one person single sail boat raced worldwide from club levels to international and Olympic competitions, well into adulthood)(Radial Rig for 110+ lbs sailors, Full Rig for 130+ lbs sailors); Own a boat, no club boats available.
Club 420 (14-18 year old)
  • 8 week session only
  • Racing Focus (PM session)
  • Signup for our "team training program" as a crew/skipper pair or individually and our instructors will pair you up
  • Bring your own boat or charter/rent one from our club
  • Boat: Club 420 (two person boat for teens young adults used from club to high school to college competition, two sails plus symmetric spinnaker and a trapeze); 
    Own or charter/rent a boat
Big Boat (14-18 year old)
  • 8 week session (practice times vary, incl. overnights and weekends)
  • Intermediate to Advanced (for experienced sailors interested in teamwork, navigation, seamanship and long distance and overnight passages/racing across Long Island Sound)
  • Add-on program for Feva/Laser/420 sailors (additional fee req. – contact us: juniorsailing@cedarpointyc.org)
  • Boat: 6-8 person keel boat with instructor on board


Program FAQ:

  • Junior sailors can enter the program at any age (6-18) and any skill level, and will be paired up with kids of similar skill/age/interest by their instructors
  • Some will want to participate recreationally and may occasionally race; others may pursue a dedicated race track
  • Kids will learn boat rigging, sailing, weather, navigation, teamwork, etc. as they progress
  • Sailors often come back year after year to grow their skills, try new boats and make new friends
  • Tracks & Boat Progression:
    Recreational: Opti->Feva->Big Boat (can move in/out of Racing track dep. on skill and interest)
    Racing: Opti->Race Opti->Race Feva/Laser/420/Big Boat (can move in/out of Recreational or change boats depending on interest)
  • You will need to purchase your own boat or rent it for a season from our club or local business like boatlocker.com. Used boats usually avail. for sale from other club members – contact registration.
  • Safety is our primary concern – all instructors are CPR and US Sailing instructor certified, everyone wears life jackets, we use multiple safety boats, monitor for bad weather and stay on shore if needed
